It would be advantageous to develop critical thinking skills, practice memorisation techniques and to assist in the process of approaching other subjects if students are familiarised with Art in their early years. This is because Art is an open-minded subject and the best way for children to make the most of their own ability to study, to work and to achieve success in their lives.
Therefore, at WASS, even from the age of preschool and primary grades, students of WASS are introduced to a lot of different Art subjects such as singing, dancing, playing instruments, painting, sculpturing and pottery. In addition to teaching knowledge inside the classroom, at WASS we always take the time to listen and help children find their favourite subjects. Therefore, it is important to add more creative and practical skills in the after-school clubs to make the children get use to the ‘special’ language – the language of the heart and soul.
In order to inspire children to love Arts, in my teaching practice, I try to encourage more confidence in the students and prohibit the comparison of one student work to others as everyone is different. Learning should not just be focused on meeting targets and should focus more on the whole process, which is what Art entails. I want to enforce the idea in students that they are not being assessed but encouraged to find their own style and their own means of escapism through creating and using their imaginations. Giving children the freedom to make their own decisions like what colour they want to use or tasks such as learning how to form a clay pot can boost their confidence and strengthen emotional maturity. I hope they will have the time to be themselves in the place of colour, poetry, music, and dance. Thereby, the child’s brain will be stimulated, developed and facilitated with special abilities.
Getting the children to approach and love the arts in the early ages will help them express themselves confidently allowing their personality and creativity to shine. Moreover, the children will develop and expand their knowledge and have a balanced lifestyle. Therefore, listening to, understanding and accompanying your child’s artistic dreams is the mission that WASS teachers and parents will need to oversee closely and enthusiastically.
