Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is an essential part of the Western Australian Curriculum. It is a core focus that is thoughtfully integrated throughout the educational journey from Kindergarten to Year 12, supporting students in their holistic development – academically, socially, and emotionally.

At WASS, the SEL program is embedded across the curriculum and closely aligned with the Personal and Social Capability—one of the seven General Capabilities outlined in the Western Australian Curriculum. This integration occurs across various learning areas, including:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Health and Physical Education
  • The Arts (Visual Arts, Music, Dance)
  • Digital Technologies & Food Technologies
  • Digital Citizenship (Years 1 – 5)

Within the Australian Curriculum framework, students develop their Personal and Social Capability by learning how to better understand themselves and others, and by building the capacity to manage relationships, learning, work, and life effectively. This capability includes a range of skills and applied practices such as recognizing and regulating emotions, developing empathy and understanding relationships, building and maintaining positive relationships, making responsible decisions, collaborating effectively in teams, responding constructively to challenges, and strengthening leadership skills.

These core elements of Personal and Social Capability are deeply interconnected:

  • Self-management
  • Self-awareness
  • Social awareness
  • Social management

Progress in any one of these areas helps enhance growth in the others, leading to a stronger overall capacity for personal growth and social interaction. Importantly, as students develop a clearer understanding of their emotions, values, strengths, and abilities, they become more confident in managing their behavior, showing empathy, and fostering positive, respectful relationships.

Objectives of the SEL Program at WASS:

  • Develop self-awareness: Understand emotions, values, and personal beliefs.
  • Foster self-management: Regulate emotions, stress, and behaviors.
  • Enhance social capability: Cooperate, listen, and communicate effectively.
  • Promote responsible decision-making: Make ethical and culturally appropriate choices.
  • Encourage social responsibility and empathy: Respect and appreciate diversity.

Benefits for Students:

  • Increased self-confidence, motivation, and academic achievement.
  • Reduced disruptive behavior, anxiety, and depression.
  • Strengthened life skills for success in a globalized world.
