Each practical experience is an opportunity for WASSers to gain new knowledge, apply what they’ve learned, and develop essential life skills.

WASS understands that learning goes beyond traditional classroom settings. The experiences outside the classroom and the lessons that students gain through their own curiosity are an essential part of the process of their growth and connecting theory with practice. In October 2024, WASSers participated in a series of inspiring Practical Learning Activities.

1. The Practical Learning Activities Week for Kindergarten

From October 10 to 18, 2024, the little WASSers from WASS Kindergarten participated in the Practical Learning Activities exploring big supermarkets such as LOTTE Mart and Emart.

Stepping beyond their familiar desks and chairs, the learning space for the little WASSers was expanded to a completely new environment, helping them apply the knowledge they’ve learned to real-life situations in a flexible and lively way. Throughout these practical learning activities, the children were able to see, touch, smell, and observe a variety of foods.  They explored and identified different food categories, learned to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy options, and better understood nutritional value and dietary balance. This experience helped them develop healthy eating habits from an early age.

2. Enriching Field Trips with Countless New Experiences for Secondary and High School WASSers

On October 10, 2024, WASSers from the Secondary and High Schools visited World Farm. Here, the students immersed themselves in nature, participated in bonding activities, and explored the process of producing essential oils and fragrances from all-natural ingredients.

WASSers also had the hands-on experience of making their lemongrass mosquito repellent, deepening their understanding of how to utilize natural resources to protect their health and the environment. The Field Trip not only brought joy to the WASSers but also offered valuable lessons, helping them gain a deeper understanding of natural resource conservation and contributing to building a clean, green, and sustainable environment. All of this aligns with education about sustainability, a key focus of the Western Australian curriculum that aims to nurture individuals with a broad vision and a sense of responsibility towards common societal and community issues.

On October 16, 2024, Year 8 WASSers stepped into a rich historical environment through a Practical Learning Activity at the Southern Women’s Museum. Moving through each exhibition area with various themes and artifacts, WASSers gained deeper insights into the immense roles and contributions of women in production, battle, defense, and nation-building.

In addition, Years 11 and 12 WASSers had a Practical Learning Activity at the IDECAF. There, the students explored valuable books and a wealth of research materials and viewed the “Earth & Water” painting exhibition. Through this experience, WASSers gained new knowledge, appreciated the subtle cultural fusion between the two countries, and explored diverse perspectives on life and society.

The Practical Learning Activities have helped WASSers across all year levels not only accumulate new knowledge and broaden their understanding of history and culture but also ignite their curiosity and love for learning. This will serve as a valuable foundation, enabling WASSers to develop critical thinking and confidently embrace new knowledge in the future.
