Teaching Methods

With a belief that “Every student is a leader,” the Western Australian International School System confidently applies advanced teaching methods to all our educational programs. Our teachers regularly participate in professional development in order to keep abreast of new teaching methods. Below are some the typical methods applied at WASS:

  1. “Active Learning” method

    Active learning is a teaching method that promotes the active involvement, initiative and creativity of students. With this teaching method, teachers strive to create “positive awareness” activities for the students. With this teaching method the teacher plays the role of an instructor, while the students are the center of the class. Applying this learning method from pre-school levels onward helps students practice teamwork and self-learning skills from an early age.

  2. “Critical thinking” method

    The critical thinking method helps students to actively solve problems and complicated situations based on their own thoughts and opinions. Through self-exploring, asking questions and finding answers by themselves, their thoughts, attitudes and beliefs will become more reasoned and accurate. This helps orientate the students towards independent thinking. It not only makes teaching and learning processes become an interesting two-way process, but also shortens the distance between the teachers and the students. It leads to a more open and dynamic environment for the students.

  3. “Integrated Curriculum ” method

    This method is extremely necessary for the students to have a more dynamic and flexible view towards the knowledge that they have accumulated. Through integrating many subjects at the same time from an early age, students will be taught how the knowledge obtain in learn one subject can be also applied to other subjects that they are learning. For example using this method, exercises are designed to overlap between subjects such as between Maths – Vietnamese; Maths – English; English – Drawing and so on. With this teaching method, students can rapidly expand their creative thinking ability.

  4. “Learning by Teaching” method

    Through the “Learning by Teaching” method, students are given the opportunity to develop their presentation abilities and learn to express themselves confidently. Through this approach they are trained to develop teamwork skills that promote solidarity, sharing, social skills and creativity.

  5. “Active Reading” Program

    Today, with a rapid development of information technology, reading culture is overwhelmed by many kinds of modern entertainment. However, reading is an effective method that not only helps students cultivate knowledge but also perfects their personality. Studying at WASS, every week the students will read an article or a short English story and present what they read to their class. It helps them improve their reading, language skills and establishes a good habit of reading at early ages.

  6. STEAM Method (Science – Technology – Engineering – Art – Mathematics)

    This is a new education approach that combines Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics to teach students. STEAM is a shift from traditional education to a modern which involves and motivates students to independently solve problems.

    For Kindergarten and elementary levels, teachers will encourage students to try new and different ideas, and to not “be afraid of being wrong”. Teachers listen to different ideas from students and teach them basic and real knowledge at an early age. For secondary and high school levels, STEAM equips and requires students to think about careers, and to have hobbies. STEAM promotes the development of analytic and evaluation skills in students.

    With STEAM, they learn and apply knowledge, skills, and self-discipline by doing projects and research related to their lessons in class. Students also are given opportunities to evaluate their own hobbies, interests, experiences and talents so that they can improve their personal development day by day. It’s very helpful for them to pursue big dreams and goals after leaving school. With these above advantages, I believe that STEAM will educate young people, regardless of their interests or levels of ability, to become global citizens in their own community.
