Letter from the Board of Principals
Welcome parents and students to the November E-newsletter of the Western Australian School System,
After nearly 3 months of online learning due to the influence of the COVID – 19 epidemic, the school board would like to congratulate the students who have successfully completed some of the first exams of the school year with remarkable results.
One of many positives for the school community this month was that the majority of our years 7 to 12 students receive their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. This provides us all with additional optimism that our students will hopefully return to our concerns in the near future.
November 20 is a special day on the Vietnamese calendar as throughout the country students and teachers come together to celebrate Teacher’s Day. All the teachers and students had a day of the online meeting, singing together and the students sent their best wishes to the teachers who have accompanied them.
This month all three WASS campuses introduced the new ‘House System’ to the students. The House System is designed to encourage students to participate and integrate into student-centered group activities and work together in a collaborative spirit to find creative solutions to a range of problems. In November, the students were divided into four teams and were asked to design the logo for their House. This logo competition resulted in many interesting and creative logos. The Board of Principals voted with the school community on what they thought to be the best design for each House and the results will be made available in the near future.
Our senior secondary students continue to learn and study as they work to the best of their ability to complete the requirements of their respective programs. Our WACE students finished their end of Year 11 exams this month and are eagerly waiting for their final course marks and course grades to be finalized by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA). Our IBDP students in year 12 are working on finalizing their internal assessments for all of their courses. This month saw all of our IBDP-12 students reach an important milestone as they submitted their extended essays, which they all have been working very hard on over the past 15 months.
The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) organized workshops about Technologies to ensure our teachers understand the changes to the syllabus and how they are to be implemented in the classroom. They also conducted a review on our first set of Online Literacy and Numeracy assessment results and together we formulated a plan to ensure the ongoing success of our students. Finally, SCSA conducted an audit on our Year 12 WACE curriculum documents as we are about to start teaching these courses for the first time in December 2021.
Next month will bring an end to semester 1 and the students will have an opportunity to showcase what they have learned at the end of the month through the completion of their E-portfolios and assessments. December is also a special time for many members of the WASS community as we come together with family, friends, and loved ones to celebrate Christmas and appreciate the special time and moments we get to share together. We at WASS would like to wish all a joyous and merry festive season and wish you all good health and happy memories.
